This metal badge features the Alpine Police Department insignia, serving the city of Alpine, Texas, the seat of Brewster County in the Big Bend country of far West Texas. It is an oval shield badge struck in polished gold, framed by a twisted rope border and built around a raised Texas map.
Shape & Base: The badge is die-struck as an upright oval shield, and a twisted rope runs the full perimeter as its border. Inside that frame the field is cut as a radiating sunburst, with fine lines fanning outward from the middle toward the rope.
Center: A large outline of the State of Texas is struck in relief across most of the face, raised in plain gold against the sunburst behind it. Set on the map is a red enamel disc holding a gold star framed by a gold laurel wreath, which puts the only color on the badge at its center.
Ring & Banner Lettering: OFFICER arcs across a gold banner at the top of the oval in black-filled letters. Two more gold banners cross the lower half reading ALPINE POLICE and TEXAS, lettered the same way, and there are no flags or city seal anywhere on the design.
Enamel & Tonal Detail: Red enamel appears in one place only, as the disc at the center of the map. Everything else is carried in polished gold, so the rope border, the sunburst, the map outline and the wreathed star all read through relief with black used only as lettering fill.
