About the tool

What is TruePatch Designer?

TruePatch Designer is the online custom patch designer tool from Owl Badges, a U.S. manufacturer of custom badges and patches that has produced uniforms and insignia for over 5,000 agencies since 1999. The tool lets police departments, sheriff’s offices, fire departments, EMS agencies, security companies, military units, veteran organizations, scout troops, motorcycle clubs, corporate uniform programs, sports teams, and volunteer organizations design, customize, and order embroidered patches, woven patches, and PVC rubber patches online in a single browser session — including custom emblems, multi-rank department orders, sequential numbering, and direct payment by credit card, ACH, or department purchase order.

Unlike most patch ordering processes that require a dealer, a separate quote step, or a back-and-forth email proof workflow before a buyer can place an order, TruePatch Designer handles the entire workflow in-browser. A single officer can design and order a personal unit patch, a quartermaster can outfit an entire department with grouped quantity pricing, a corporate uniform program manager can place a 500-piece embroidered patch order for new hires, and a motorcycle club president can design a three-piece club patch — all through the same tool.

The tool is designed for buyers without prior patch design experience. The six-step workflow is scaffolded with stock libraries, real-time preview, and live chat support from the Owl Badges in-house design team available during the design session.

Customization

What can you design?

Four categories of customization are exposed in the tool, each with stock options and full custom paths.

Material and construction

Three patch types

Choose embroidered patches (traditional thread-on-twill construction with merrowed or hot-cut borders), woven patches (high-detail flat-thread construction for intricate artwork and small text), or PVC rubber patches (3D-molded soft rubber for tactical and outdoor wear). Each material renders in real-time preview as you select it.

Shape and size

5,000+ stock patch shapes

The shape library covers shoulder patches, chest patches, rocker patches, name tapes, flag patches, morale patches, MC three-piece sets, scout activity patches, sports team patches, and fully custom shapes. Standard sizes from 1″ name tapes through 6″ jacket-back patches. Every shape in the library is pre-validated for production.

Color and thread

Unlimited thread colors and panels

Pick from the full Madeira and Robison-Anton thread libraries — over 400 colors. Add metallic gold, metallic silver, neon, and glow-in-the-dark threads for accents. Live preview renders the color combination as you select. For PVC rubber patches, color is matched to Pantone reference. For woven patches, fine-detail color rendering down to single-thread resolution.

Text and emblem

Custom department name, rank, seal, or club emblem

Add department name, rank, badge number, unit identifier, motto, club name, chapter, year, or memorial inscription. Twelve typefaces curated for patch embroidery and weaving. Upload your department seal, club emblem, unit insignia, or corporate logo. Real-time preview of every text and emblem change.

Inside the tool

The integrated Emblem Designer

The central emblem is the most distinctive element of a custom patch. TruePatch Designer includes an integrated Emblem Designer that handles three paths to a finished emblem, each completed in-session.

Path 01

Use a stock emblem from the library

The stock emblem library covers all 50 U.S. state seals, major federal law enforcement agency seals (FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, ICE, CBP, and others), state police and highway patrol seals, municipal police and fire department seals for major U.S. cities, branch-of-service emblems for all U.S. military branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force), BSA and GSA scout emblems, common MC chapter emblems, and corporate uniform program templates. Every emblem in the library is pre-validated for patch production at standard sizes and materials.

Path 02

Upload your own emblem or logo

Upload a department seal, agency emblem, club emblem, unit insignia, corporate logo, scout troop crest, or original artwork directly inside the designer. The Owl Badges live chat team is available during the upload session to clean up the artwork, adjust it for the patch layout, and confirm the file will render correctly on the produced patch. Embroidered patches require artwork digitization — included free at upload. Uploaded emblems save to your account for unlimited reuse on additional patches, badges, or accessories.

Path 03

Build a custom emblem from scratch

The integrated Emblem Designer lets you build a fully custom emblem without leaving the workflow. Add custom logos, wordmarks, taglines, mottos, dates, or unit identifiers. Combine uploaded artwork with text elements (for example, a department seal upload with "EST. 1885" or "TO PROTECT AND SERVE" added as a banner). Output is a fully customized emblem used only on your patches.

Three material options on every emblem
Embroidered

Traditional thread-on-twill construction. The classic uniform patch look. Best for shoulder patches, chest patches, and any design with bold colors and standard detail levels. Merrowed or hot-cut border options.

Woven

High-detail flat-thread construction. Renders fine artwork, small text, and intricate gradients better than embroidery. Best for corporate logos, military unit insignia with complex detail, and patches with photographic elements.

PVC rubber

3D-molded soft rubber. Weatherproof, tactical-grade, and visually distinct. Best for outdoor wear, tactical gear, morale patches, and durability-focused applications. Hook-and-loop backing standard.

$0

Industry-standard practice for custom patch artwork digitization and PVC mold creation is $80 to $300 per design, plus a separate setup fee per material change. TruePatch Designer eliminates this entirely. Custom emblems — uploaded, modified, or built from scratch — produce at no additional setup, digitization, or mold charge on standard patch shapes.

Military
Veteran groups
Scouts (BSA, GSA)

Sports & schools

Individual sworn officers ordering personal unit patches, commission patches, or off-duty identification. Quartermasters and procurement officers outfitting entire departments with grouped quantity pricing. Chiefs and command staff ordering rank-specific patches — Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Officer — in a single coordinated order.

The tool is used by municipal police departments, county sheriff’s offices, state police and highway patrol agencies, federal law enforcement agencies (FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, Secret Service, ICE, CBP, federal probation), correctional facilities, transit police, port authority police, university police, school district police, fire departments, emergency medical services, search and rescue, public safety dispatchers, private security companies, casino security operations, executive protection details, and federal contract security.

Beyond public safety, TruePatch Designer serves U.S. military units ordering unit insignia, deployment patches, and morale patches; veteran organizations placing reunion and memorial orders; Boy Scouts of America troops and Girl Scouts of the USA councils ordering activity patches and rank insignia; motorcycle clubs designing three-piece chapter sets; corporate uniform programs outfitting field service teams, hospitality staff, and retail employees; sports teams and school athletics programs producing letterman patches and team identifiers; and volunteer organizations including CERT teams, search-and-rescue groups, fire department auxiliaries, and disaster response volunteers.

For each of these audiences, the tool offers credential verification appropriate to the patch type, pricing that scales from single-patch orders to enterprise rollouts of 10,000+ units, and the option to design either a personalized variant of an existing template or a fully custom new design.

For first-time buyers

Built for buyers without design experience.

Many buyers ordering custom patches have never designed one before. A first-time buyer may be a newly promoted chief outfitting their command, a department secretary handling patch replacement orders for the first time, a scout den leader ordering activity patches for a new troop, a corporate HR manager placing the first uniform patch order for a new hire class, an MC officer designing club colors after a charter change, or a veteran organizing a unit reunion patch run.

TruePatch Designer is designed for that buyer. The six-step workflow scaffolds the decisions, the stock libraries cover the common starting points, the live preview shows the design as it builds, and the Owl Badges in-house design team is available via live chat during the design session to answer questions about material, backing, sizing, or production constraints.

If a buyer uploads a custom emblem that needs adjustment to render correctly at patch size, the live chat team can clean up the artwork in-session. If a buyer is unsure whether to choose embroidered, woven, or PVC rubber, the team can explain the difference and recommend based on the design and use case. If a department is ordering memorial patches with a tight timeline, the team can confirm rush-handling options.

After checkout, every buyer receives a production art proof showing the exact design that will be manufactured. The buyer reviews and approves the proof before manufacturing begins, so any rendering differences between the on-screen preview and final production specs can be corrected before the patches enter production.

Department procurement

Group orders. Live pricing. One session.

Department-level patch orders carry requirements that individual orders do not — multiple ranks or units in one order, grouped quantity pricing applied across all variants, accounts payable workflows, purchase orders with NET-30 payment terms, and the ability for the order to be reviewed by chiefs, finance, and procurement before final approval.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

TruePatch Designer is the online custom patch designer tool from Owl Badges, a U.S. manufacturer of custom badges and patches. It lets law enforcement officers, departments, fire and EMS agencies, security companies, military units, scout troops, motorcycle clubs, corporate uniform programs, sports teams, and volunteer organizations design, customize, and order embroidered patches, woven patches, and PVC rubber patches online in a single browser session — including custom emblems, multi-unit orders, and direct department purchase orders. The tool removes the dealer layer typical of the patch industry and lets buyers complete the order in-browser at direct manufacturer pricing.

TruePatch Designer runs in any modern web browser with no software install. You choose a patch material (embroidered, woven, or PVC rubber), select a shape, add your agency or organization name and rank or unit, enter custom text, upload or design a central emblem, and apply thread or PVC colors. The tool renders your patch in real time as you make each choice and shows live volume pricing. When you are satisfied, you check out directly in the browser. Owl Badges then produces a production art proof for your approval before manufacturing begins.

TruePatch Designer supports three patch materials. Embroidered patches use traditional thread-on-twill construction with merrowed or hot-cut borders — the classic uniform patch look, best for shoulder and chest patches. Woven patches use high-detail flat-thread construction that renders fine artwork, small text, and intricate gradients better than embroidery — best for corporate logos and military unit insignia with complex detail. PVC rubber patches use 3D-molded soft rubber with Pantone-matched colors — weatherproof, tactical-grade, and visually distinct, best for outdoor wear, tactical gear, and morale patches.

Yes. TruePatch Designer accepts uploaded department logos, city seals, county seals, unit emblems, club emblems, corporate logos, scout troop crests, and any other graphic file you want to use as the patch’s central emblem. Supported file formats include PNG, JPG, SVG, AI, EPS, and PDF. Higher-resolution files produce sharper detail on the finished patch — vector files (SVG, AI, EPS, PDF) are preferred. There is no upload fee, no digitization fee, and no setup fee for uploading and using your own emblem on a standard patch shape.

Yes. TruePatch Designer integrates with the Owl Badges Emblem Designer, which lets you build a custom emblem from scratch — choosing a shape, banner ribbons, central elements, state outlines, year of establishment, motto text, and decorative borders. The custom emblem you build can be applied directly to your patch design in TruePatch Designer without leaving the browser. There is no design fee for using the Emblem Designer and no digitization or mold fee when applying a custom emblem to a standard patch shape.

No. TruePatch Designer works without an account — you can design a complete patch, see live pricing, and proceed toward checkout entirely in your browser session. Creating an Owl Badges account is optional and lets you save your designs to return to later, reorder previous designs, share designs with your department or organization for review, and track production status. Departments and organizations placing bulk orders typically create an account to manage multiple variant specifications and approve proofs collaboratively.

Yes. TruePatch Designer displays live per-unit and total order pricing as you make each design choice. The pricing panel shows the applicable volume discount tier in real time — 10–49 units at list price, 50–99 units at approximately 30% off, 100–249 units at approximately 50% off, 250–499 units at approximately 65% off, and 500+ units at 75–85% off (with the lowest tier reaching $1.40 per patch at 1,000+ units). The price shown in the designer is the price you pay at checkout. No dealer markup is added, since Owl Badges is the manufacturer.

After you submit your design through TruePatch Designer, an Owl Badges production artist prepares a high-resolution production art proof showing the exact patch as it will be manufactured, including the central emblem, all thread or PVC colors, and text. You review the proof and either approve it or request changes — there is no limit on revision rounds, and no fee for changes at this stage. Once approved, your patches enter production: 3–4 weeks for embroidered, 3–5 weeks for woven, or 4–8 weeks for PVC rubber, depending on quantity.

Yes. TruePatch Designer supports bulk orders with multiple variants in a single session — for example, a police department ordering patrol, K9, SWAT, traffic, and admin patches together, or a corporate uniform program ordering separate variants for field service, hospitality, and retail teams. Volume pricing applies across the total quantity, not per variant. Departments and organizations can also pay by purchase order, with NET-30 terms available to verified agencies. Department orders start at the same 10-piece minimum as individual orders.

No. TruePatch Designer is built for officers, department procurement staff, quartermasters, scout leaders, MC officers, corporate uniform managers, and team coordinators — not graphic designers. Every choice is a guided selection from a menu of authentic patch components: materials, shapes, emblems, and thread or PVC colors that match what real public-safety agencies, military units, scout troops, motorcycle clubs, corporate programs, and sports teams use. If you get stuck, live chat support is available during U.S. business hours, and the Owl Badges design team can prepare a starting design from a photo of your existing patch at no charge.

TruePatch Designer is built for embroidered, woven, and PVC rubber patches used by police, sheriff, federal agency, corrections, fire, EMS, security, military, veteran organizations, BSA and GSA scouts, motorcycle clubs, corporate uniform programs, sports teams, schools, and volunteer organizations. Standard shapes include shoulder patches, chest patches, rocker patches, name tapes, flag patches, three-piece MC sets, morale patches, scout activity patches, and fully custom shapes. For metal badges, lapel pins, and JR officer stickers, Owl Badges produces the same design across product lines once your patch design is finalized — you do not need to redesign for each product.
