Description
This Aquinnah Massachusetts Police embroidered patch was designed for the Aquinnah Police Department on Martha’s Vineyard, featuring a bold Wampanoag Native American chief portrait alongside the iconic Gay Head Lighthouse — a richly detailed coastal scene that captures the unique cultural and geographic identity of Aquinnah, home to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head.
Shape & Base: Wide shield shape with a notched upper center indentation and rounded point at the bottom on a vivid blue sky twill fabric base with a bright gold yellow merrowed border edge. The blue base functions as the sky background for the full-color scenic composition, eliminating the need for a separate sky embroidery field and integrating the base fabric directly into the overall landscape design.
Top Section: “POLICE” is embroidered in large bold gold block lettering centered across the upper field, standing out sharply against the blue sky base with strong contrast and generous character spacing — the department title occupying the upper field above the scenic landscape composition with dominant visual weight.
Center: A richly detailed full-color scenic composition fills the center and lower field. A large Native American chief portrait in profile dominates the left and center of the design — a strong, stoic male face in left-facing profile rendered in warm brown and tan thread with detailed facial features, prominent cheekbones, and a determined expression. A traditional feathered war bonnet in red, white, and black thread frames the head — individual feathers rendered with shaft and barb detail extending upward and backward from the brow. A tan rocky cliff or headland — referencing the famous Gay Head Cliffs of Aquinnah — rises beneath the chief’s portrait in the left-center field. A green rolling coastal hillside sweeps across the lower portion of the scene, with a blue ocean or coastal water visible to the left of the cliff. On the right side of the composition, the Gay Head Lighthouse stands on the green hillside — a red brick cylindrical tower with a white lantern room rendered in red, white, and gray thread with lighthouse architectural detail. A dark navy or black diagonal banner crosses the lower-center field with “AQUINNAH” embroidered in bold gold block lettering — the town name banner completing the geographic identification within the scenic landscape.
Bottom Section: “MASS.” is embroidered in bold gold block lettering centered in the lower field beneath the landscape scene, matching the weight and style of the “POLICE” text above and completing the state identification with strong visual symmetry against the blue base.
Embroidery Quality: The blue sky base with full-color chief portrait, Gay Head Cliffs, lighthouse, and coastal hillside creates a vivid, multi-layered scenic composition with excellent color depth and regional specificity. The Wampanoag chief portrait achieves impressive facial detail — individual features, skin tone variation, and headdress feather structure are all rendered through fine thread work. The Gay Head Lighthouse is accurately depicted with red brick tower and white lantern detail at small scale. The rocky cliff texture uses directional satin-stitch in tan and cream thread. The green coastal hillside and blue ocean provide clean landscape grounding. The gold “AQUINNAH” banner text is bold and legible. The gold merrowed border provides a clean, durable finish suited for active police uniform wear.
