Design Your Badge

How to design your police officer badge

Building your police officer badge in the Owl Badges TrueBadge Designer takes three steps — choose your style, add your rank, name, and department seal, then review and order. Here is exactly what you choose at each step.

How to buy custom police and police officer badges from Owl Badges, showing badge styles and ordering
1

Choose your style and shape

Start by picking your badge shape — shield, six- or seven-point star, eagle-top, oval, or sunburst. Police officer badges typically carry your rank on the top panel, your department or city seal in the center, and your badge number on a lower panel. Pick the style that matches your department’s pattern, or send us a photo of an existing badge to replicate exactly.

2

Add your rank, name, and seal

Enter your details: rank (Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Chief), your name or badge number, and your department name. Then set your seal — upload your department or city seal, or choose your state seal. Pick your finish: gold for command staff, silver for line officers, or two-tone. Every change previews on screen in real time in the TrueBadge Designer.

Reviewing a finished custom police officer badge design in the cart before checkout, with finish, quantity, and order total
3

Review in your cart and order

Add your finished design to the cart, where you can review every detail, swap a finish, or edit your text. Individual police officer badge orders require credential verification before production — email your badge commission or department ID. Confirm and check out; your mold is kept on file at no charge, so replacements and future orders come back identical.

Custom Police Officer Badge Pricing

Individual police officer badges start at $150. Price per badge drops as quantity rises — no minimum order, single-officer orders welcome. No setup fees, no mold fees. Department buyers ordering 10+ should see our police department badges page for agency volume pricing and PO terms.

Use the price calculator below to see the cost at your exact quantity, or read the full volume price ladder beneath it.

Per-badge pricing varies with size, metal, plating, and customization. Volume discounts apply automatically at checkout. Pricing reviewed June 2026.

How many police officer badges should you order?

Most officers order a single duty badge — but because your mold is kept on file free and production runs 8–14 weeks, ordering a spare or a dress badge at the same time saves a future rush reorder. Here is what officers most often order:

Use caseTypical orderWhy
A single duty badge1 badgeYour everyday badge, personalized with your rank, name, and badge number.
Duty + dress/spare2–3 badgesOne for daily wear, one for the dress uniform, and a spare — reaches the 3–9 break at $90 each.
Retirement or promotion set3–5 badgesA duty badge plus a framed retirement or promotion piece, often ordered together with a shadow-box badge.
Off-duty / collection2–4 badgesDuty, off-duty carry, and a display badge — one mold on file means every reorder matches.

What we recommend for a police officer badge

For daily duty wear we recommend a die-struck solid brass badge for its weight and durability. Line officers typically choose a silver finish and command staff gold, so rank reads at a glance. A shield or eagle-top shape carries your rank, name, badge number, and department or city seal cleanly. For a retirement or promotion piece, a two-tone finish on a presentation shape makes a standout keepsake. These are starting recommendations — every shape, finish, and rank is fully customizable in the TrueBadge Designer.

How much does a custom police officer badge cost?

A custom police officer badge costs $150 for a single badge and $90 each at three or more, personalized with your rank, name, badge number and department seal. There is no minimum order — one badge is a real order. Production runs 8 to 14 weeks, with no setup or mold fees at any quantity. Enter your quantity below to see your price.

Pricing on this page is for catalog spec-size police officer badges — our standard catalog shapes and sizes, personalized with your rank, name, badge number and department or city seal. Badges built to your own artwork or in a non-catalog shape are quoted separately.

Does ordering a second badge cost less per badge?

Two police officer badges cost $300. Three cost $270. Because the price drops to $90 per badge at three, the third badge does not just cost less — it makes the whole order cheaper. An officer ordering a duty badge, a dress badge and a spare pays $270 rather than $450, so the second and third badges effectively cost $60 each.

The same crossover happens at ten badges: nine cost $810, while ten cost $800. It repeats at 25 badges ($1,800 becomes $1,625), at 50 ($3,185 becomes $2,750), and at 500 ($27,445 becomes $22,500). Because your mold is retained on file at no charge, officers who expect to need a replacement or a dress badge later often order it in the same run rather than paying single-badge pricing years afterward.

Badges by Rank

What badge does each police rank wear?

Police officer and corporal badges are typically silver; sergeant and lieutenant badges are gold or silver depending on department pattern; captain and above are gold. Rank sits on the top panel, the department or city seal in the center, and the badge number on a lower panel. Every rank below is customizable in any catalog shape and finish — order yours to your own department’s pattern.

Police rank badge conventions · catalog spec-size, all fully customizable
RankTypical finishTypical shapeWho wears itOrdered when
Police OfficerSilverShield, six- or seven-point starPatrol officers on daily dutyFirst commission, or replacing a worn duty badge

DetectiveGoldShield, ovalPlainclothes investigators, often in a credential caseMove to an investigative assignment
Deputy & Assistant ChiefGoldEagle-topSenior command staffAppointment to senior command
Chief of PoliceGoldEagle-top, shieldThe department headAppointment as chief

Finish convention is set by your department, not by us — some agencies run gold for every sworn rank, others reserve it for command staff. If you are matching a badge your department already issues, send a photo with your order and we replicate the pattern exactly, including finish, shape and panel layout. A single badge at any rank is $150 with no setup fee.

Replacements

How do I replace a lost, stolen or damaged police badge?

A replacement police officer badge costs $150 and ships from the original mold if Owl Badges made it — your mold is retained free, so the replacement comes back identical to the badge you lost, with no setup fee and no minimum order. Production runs 8 to 14 weeks. Credential verification is required before any replacement enters production.

If we made your original badge

Your design specs are already on file. We pull the original artwork and strike the replacement from the same mold, so the finish, panel text, badge number and seal match the original exactly. There is no re-tooling step and no setup charge.

If another manufacturer made it

Send clear photos of the front and back plus your department name, rank and badge number. Our in-house design team reproduces the badge to match your existing department issue, including shape, finish and seal. There is no design fee, and once the new mold is cut it stays on file for every future reorder.

When a badge is worn rather than lost

Plating thinned at the edges, chipped enamel, or a badge number that no longer matches your assignment are replacement triggers, not repair jobs — a plated badge cannot be re-plated without losing the original detail. Order the replacement from your mold on file and it returns identical to the original.

Why we verify credentials first

Every individual police officer badge order — new or replacement — requires proof of commission before production begins. Email your badge commission, department ID or professional credential and we verify it in-house. We manufacture directly rather than reselling, so nothing enters production without that check. It protects the integrity of law enforcement identification.

Where to wear your badge, and which backing to order

The backing determines where the badge can be carried. Match it to how you actually work — then select it when you order.

BackingWhere it is wornOrder it when
Safety pinUniform shirt or jacket, left breast above the pocket.Standard duty wear. The default backing on most officer badges.
Belt clipDuty belt or waistband, worn at the hip.You need the badge visible without pinning through a uniform shirt.
Wallet clipBadge wallet or credential case, paired with your ID.Plainclothes assignment, off-duty carry, or court appearances.
Hook-and-loop (Velcro)Tactical vest, plate carrier, or outer carrier panel. You work in an outer vest and need to move the badge between carriers.

How to clean, polish and store a police officer badge

A plated badge is not a piece of raw metal — the finish is a thin surface layer, and the most common way a badge is ruined is being cleaned too aggressively. These are our instructions as the manufacturer.

Finish or surfaceHow to clean itNever do this
Everyday cleaning, any finishWipe with a dry microfiber cloth. For heavier soil, a drop of mild dish soap in warm water on the cloth — then dry immediately and completely.Soak the badge, or leave it damp. Trapped moisture works into the pin seam and the enamel edges.
Gold or silver platedMicrofiber and mild soap only. The shine is in the plating, not in polishing.Abrasive metal polish or polishing compound. It strips the plating — the single most common avoidable reason a badge has to be replaced.
Hard enamelStandard cleaning is safe. The color is polished flush with the metal and is durable.Scouring pads or abrasive powders, which will still dull the surrounding plating.
Soft enamelDry cloth or a barely damp cloth, wiped gently along the raised metal lines.Ultrasonic cleaners and solvents. The recessed color sits below the metal lines and will lift or craze.
Antique or oxidizedDry cloth only. The darkening in the recesses is the finish you ordered.Any polish. Polishing removes the intentional oxidation and the badge loses its antique character permanently.

Where to store a police officer badge

On dutyIn its wallet, credential case, or clipped to the belt — never loose in a pocket with keys or change, which scratches plating faster than daily wear does.
Off dutyA soft-lined case or a dedicated drawer insert. Loose in a drawer, badges rub against each other and against hardware.
Retirement or memorialA shadow box mounts and protects the badge while keeping it visible. This is the standard way a career badge is preserved and presented.
Spare on handOfficers who work outer carriers and uniform shirts often keep a second badge configured with a different backing rather than swapping hardware.

When a badge does finally wear through — plating gone thin at the edges, enamel chipped, or a number that no longer matches your assignment — your mold is already on file and kept free. Order the replacement and it comes back identical to the original, with no setup fee and no minimum. Departments replacing badges in quantity can request volume pricing at $45 per badge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Owl Badges TrueBadge Designer work?
Select any police badge and click "Design and Order." Our customizable badge designer opens instantly — add your department name, rank, badge number, and seal. Every change appears on screen in real time. When you're happy with your personalized police badge, add to cart and checkout.
Can I get a personalized police badge with my name and badge number?
Yes. Every police badge is fully personalized with your department name, rank, badge number, and official seal. Use our customizable police badge designer to see your personalized badge in real time before ordering.
What ranks do you make police badges for?
We make badges for every sworn rank: Police Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Detective, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief and Chief of Police. Officer and corporal badges are typically silver, sergeant and lieutenant gold or silver depending on department pattern, and captain and above gold. Every rank is available in any catalog shape and finish, personalized to you.
What badge styles can I choose for my police officer badge?
You can choose a shield, a five-, six- or seven-point star, an oval, an eagle-top, or a sunburst, each in gold, silver or two-tone. Every style is personalized with your rank, name, badge number and your department or city seal. If you are matching a badge your department already issues, send a photo with your order and we replicate the pattern exactly. A single badge in any style is $150 with no setup fee.
Can I order a badge for my municipal or township department?
Yes. We make individual officer badges for municipal, township, village, borough, city and regional police departments, personalized with your department name, city seal and rank. Credential verification is required before production, so have your badge commission or department ID ready. One badge is a real order at $150, with no minimum.
Can I order a badge for my new rank after a promotion?
Yes. A promotion is one of the most common reasons officers order a new badge. Your new badge carries your updated rank, and you can change finish at the same time if your department runs silver for line officers and gold for supervisors. If we made your original badge, your mold is on file, so the new one matches it exactly. Ordering the promotion badge together with a dress badge or spare reaches the $90 price at three badges.
Can I include my city seal on the police badge?
Yes. Upload your city seal or official emblem directly through our badge designer. We can also help create custom seals for your police department. Our design team can reproduce virtually any city seal as your personalized badge centerpiece.
Do you make badges for specialized units?
Yes. We create custom police badges for specialized units including K-9 units, SWAT teams, Traffic Division, Narcotics, Vice, Community Policing, School Resource Officers, and other specialized divisions. Each badge can be personalized with unit designations and specialized emblems.
How long does it take to receive my police officer badge?
Standard production runs 8 to 14 weeks from art approval. Each badge is die-struck from raw metal, plated, hand-polished, enamel-filled and inspected before it ships, and you receive tracking once it is on the way. Rush production is available on request for academy graduations, promotion ceremonies and memorial badges.
Do I get a discount if I'm ordering just for myself?
Individual officers pay $150 per badge with no minimum order, and that price already includes free in-house design work plus your mold retained for future reorders. Volume pricing begins at 10 badges: 10 or more are $80 each, saving $70 per badge against the single-badge price. At 25 badges the price is $65 each, and at 50 it is $55 each. If you are buying your own badge, the single-badge price applies. If you are outfitting a department or agency, see our Police Badges page for full volume pricing, purchase orders, and agency-wide terms.
How much does a custom police badge cost?
A custom police officer badge costs $150 for a single badge, with volume pricing bringing the per-badge cost down to $45 on the largest department orders. Ten badges are $80 each, saving $70 per badge against the single-badge price; 50 are $55 each; 500 or more are $45 each. There is no minimum order quantity, so you can order a single badge or thousands. Prices are for catalog spec-size badges and include artwork, mold and setup at no charge.
How do I pay for a personal badge order?
Individual officers pay by credit card or PayPal at checkout — no account setup and no paperwork. Departments and agencies ordering in volume can pay by purchase order with Net-30 terms; we provide W-9 forms, vendor documentation, and invoicing on your department's standard terms.
Can I order just one police officer badge?
Yes. There is no minimum order quantity — you can order a single badge. Every badge goes through the same die-strike, plating, polishing, and hand inspection regardless of order size, so one custom made police officer badge is built to exactly the same standard as a 500-piece department run.
Can I order a single replacement badge?
Yes. If your badge was damaged, lost, or stolen, we can manufacture an exact-match replacement. If the badge was originally ordered from us, we can pull the design specs directly. If not, provide photos and department details and our design team can reproduce the badge to match your existing department issue.
Do you offer rush production?
Yes. Rush production is available for urgent orders—new officer academies, promotion ceremonies, memorial badges, or department emergencies. Contact our team directly with your deadline and we'll confirm rush availability and timeline for your specific order.
Are policeman badges, cop badges, and police officer badges the same thing?
Yes — "policeman badges," "cop badges," and "police officer badges" all refer to the same thing: the official metal duty badge a sworn officer carries.
