Description
This metal badge features the Abilene Police Department insignia, serving the city of Abilene, Texas, the seat of Taylor County in the west central part of the state. It is an oval shield badge struck in polished gold, carrying a large faceted star and a four-word motto ring at its center.
Shape & Base: The badge is die-struck as an upright oval shield, with a raised panel across the top, a banner across the base, and a row of beaded rivet dots running inside the outer edge. Wheat sprays are worked in relief along both sides, and a raised outline of the State of Texas sits at the very bottom of the oval.
Center: A large five-point star fills the middle of the shield, faceted so each arm splits into beveled planes. At its heart a black enamel ring carries THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS in gold lettering around a gold star set in a laurel wreath, and a raised plate below the star reads EST 1883.
Ring & Banner Lettering: OFFICER arcs across the raised top panel and ABILENE sits on a banner beneath it, with POLICE across the lower banner. Between them a ring of four words circles the star, reading HONOR and SERVICE across the upper quadrants and VALOR and DUTY across the lower, which is more motto text than any other design in this gallery carries.
Enamel & Tonal Detail: Enamel is used sparingly, filling the seal ring in black and the two small flag panels that flank the lower banner, one the United States flag and the other the Texas flag. Everything else is carried in polished gold, with black used only as lettering fill.
Finish Quality: Die-struck in solid metal with a polished gold plating, hand-finished so the star facets hold clean edges and the rivet dots stay even around the oval. For the constable office serving the same county, see the Taylor County Constable badge.
