Description
This metal badge features the Austin Police Department insignia, serving the city of Austin, Texas, the state capital and the seat of Travis County. It is an oval shield badge struck in polished gold and finished fully tonal, built around a raised domed building at its center.
Shape & Base: The badge is die-struck as an upright oval shield with a stepped rim, and the field behind the center is cut as a radiating sunburst. The relief is worked at several depths, so the architecture at the middle stands well forward of the rays fanning out behind it.
Center: A domed building fills the middle of the shield, with a rotunda and lantern rising at the center and long symmetrical wings reaching out to either side. A large gold star sits above the dome, and a tonal gold seal overlays the facade reading STATE OF across the top and TEXAS across the bottom around a wreathed star.
Ring & Banner Lettering: A gold banner arcs across the top of the oval reading CHIEF, and a second banner crosses the lower half reading AUSTIN POLICE, both lettered in black fill. Below them a plate carries four raised gold stars set in a row.
Enamel & Tonal Detail: There is no enamel anywhere on this badge. Black appears only as fill in the two banners, and every other element, from the dome and its wings to the sunburst, the seal and the four stars, is carried in polished gold and reads through relief alone.
Finish Quality: Die-struck in solid metal with a polished gold plating, hand-finished so the columns and window courses on the building hold their line at size and the dome keeps its shape against the rays behind it. For the constable office serving the same county, see the Travis County Constable Precinct 3 badge.
