Sergeant chevrons made for real police departments

These production photos show sergeant chevrons stitched for named agencies, labeled with the department and grade. Ordering for one of them, or want your own sergeant stripes reproduced? Send a photo of the current chevron and we match it on the proof.

How It Works

Ordering sergeant stripes takes three steps

Choose the grade, set the colors and backing in the browser, then order or ask for department pricing. No artwork or setup fees at any step.

Step 1

Discover sergeant stripe styles

Start with the grade: plain three-chevron stripes, one rocker for staff or senior sergeants, two for master sergeants, and a diamond or star for first sergeants and sergeant majors. Every style is satin-stitched thread on twill, finished with a merrowed or hot-cut edge.

Design Your Sergeant Stripes

How to design a sergeant patch

Settle these three details in order and the proof comes back ready to approve.

Illustration of a sergeant major rank patch with three chevrons, three rockers and a center star in silver on black
1

Set the grade: chevrons, rockers and devices

Every sergeant patch starts with three chevrons. Add one rocker below for staff or senior sergeant, two for master sergeant, and a center diamond or star where your department uses first sergeant or sergeant major. If your titles differ, tell us the title and send a photo; the proof follows your structure, not a generic chart.

Illustration of a three-chevron sergeant rank patch in gold thread on black twill
2

Choose the thread, twill and edge

Pick the thread for the chevrons and the twill color behind them. Gold on black and silver on black suit dark uniforms, white on navy reads clearly on light blue shirts, and black on coyote or olive is the subdued pairing for vests. A merrowed edge gives a rolled border; a hot-cut edge follows the chevron points more tightly.

Illustration of a subdued three-chevron sergeant patch in black thread on olive drab for tactical uniforms
3

Pick a backing for each uniform, then approve

Sew-on is the standard for shirts and jackets. Hook-and-loop, which adds $2 per patch, suits vests and plate carriers. Iron-on is for academy or short-term uniforms. Approve the free proof and production finishes 3 to 4 weeks later.

Hook-and-loop backing adds $2.00 per patch. Quantities of 500 or more are quoted individually. Pricing reviewed October 2026.

What we recommend for sergeant stripes

Order sew-on stripes in your dress colors for every shirt and jacket, plus a subdued hook-and-loop chevron for each vest. Count two per garment and two spares per sergeant. Keep staff and master sergeant grades in the same thread as the base chevron so a promotion only adds rockers.

Does ordering a few more sergeant patches lower the total?

Sixteen sergeant patches cost $320. Twenty cost $280. Four extra chevrons take $40 off the bill.

Forty-five sergeant patches cost $495, while fifty cost $325. Ninety-five cost $570, while one hundred cost $550. When a promotion list lands just under a tier break, round up: the extra chevrons cover the next mid-year promotion or a torn sleeve at no added cost. For 500 or more, ask for a written quote.

Sergeant Titles

What do the different sergeant insignia mean?

Three chevrons mean sergeant; rockers, diamonds and stars mark the senior sergeant grades. Titles change from one department to the next, so the table pairs each insignia with the titles departments commonly give it.

Sergeant insignia and the titles departments use for them
InsigniaCommon titlesHow departments use it
Three chevronsSergeant, patrol sergeant, desk sergeantFirst-line supervisor of a shift or squad

Sergeant Patches by Agency

Who orders sergeant patches, and when?

Any agency with first-line supervisors orders sergeant stripes, and most order them the day a promotion list is posted. The table shows the usual colors, backing and ordering moment for eight kinds of sergeant.

Promotion Sets

Order a complete sergeant promotion set

A new sergeant usually needs stripes on more than one garment: two class A sleeves, two class B sleeves, a jacket and a vest. Order the sew-on chevrons and the subdued hook-and-loop vest chevron together, from the same artwork, so the proportions match on the day of the ceremony. Each design has its own 10-piece minimum.

Reorders

How do we reorder or replace sergeant stripes?

Reordered sergeant stripes match the first batch because the artwork and thread colors stay on file for free. Send the grade and quantity; the 10-piece minimum applies.

Reorder sergeant chevrons after a promotion list

Order every garment the new sergeant wears at once, so nothing waits on a second run.

Replace worn sergeant chevrons

Car doors and duty gear wear the thread at the shoulder. Replace faded stripes in batches of 10 so the squad matches.

Replacement sergeant stripes after a uniform change

A new shirt color may need new thread. Send the fabric color and we prove the stripes against it.

Lateral sergeants and returning supervisors

A sergeant hired laterally needs your stripes, not the old agency's. Keep spares in the supply room.

Custom Sergeant Patches for Departments, Order by Grade

Which page fits depends on who is being promoted. Officers below sergeant, and captains or chiefs above, are covered on the page for chevrons and bars for every other rank. A sergeant moving up to watch commander needs the single bar a lieutenant wears rather than stripes. For artwork that is already drawn and only needs your colors, start from finished chevron artwork for any grade.

When Departments Order

Reasons departments order sergeant stripes

Sergeant patches go on a purchase order at predictable moments. These are the fourteen we hear about most.

  • ✓A sergeant promotion ceremony is scheduled
  • ✓A new sergeant class comes off the eligibility list
  • ✓An acting sergeant is made permanent
  • ✓The department adds a staff or master sergeant step
  • ✓A first sergeant post is created for a district
  • ✓Patrol switches to outer vest carriers
  • ✓A new class A shirt color is adopted
  • ✓Faded stripes fail a uniform inspection
  • ✓A specialty unit gets its own sergeant and rocker
  • ✓Lateral sergeants join from another agency
  • ✓Reserve officers promote to sergeant
  • ✓The supply room runs out of spare chevrons
  • ✓An honor guard sergeant needs metallic stripes
  • ✓A cadet program names its cadet sergeants

Each moment starts at 10 patches per design. The artwork stays on file, so the next sergeant list costs only the per-patch price.

FAQ

Sergeant Patch FAQs

How does the Owl Badges TruePatch Designer work?

The TruePatch Designer is an online patch builder that runs in your browser. Choose a sergeant grade, set the thread and twill colors, add rocker text and pick a backing, and the preview changes with each choice. You can start without an account, revise without limit and pay no design fee. When the stripes look right, order the design or send it for a department quote.

What is a sergeant patch?

A sergeant patch is an embroidered rank insignia, usually three chevrons, worn on both upper sleeves to show the sergeant grade. Senior sergeant grades add one to three rockers under the chevrons, and some add a center diamond or star. Subdued versions with hook-and-loop backing go on vests and plate carriers, so most sergeants wear two versions of the same insignia.

How much do sergeant stripes cost?

Sergeant stripes cost 20 dollars per patch at 10 to 19 pieces, 14 dollars at 20 to 29, 11 dollars at 30 to 49, 6 dollars 50 cents at 50 to 74, 6 dollars at 75 to 99, 5 dollars 50 cents at 100 to 249 and 3 dollars from 250 to 499. Orders of 500 or more are quoted individually. Hook-and-loop backing adds 2 dollars per patch, and there are no setup or digitizing fees.

Are sergeant stripes sold in pairs?

Sergeant stripes are priced per patch, not per pair. A sergeant who wears stripes on both sleeves of one shirt needs two patches, so the 10-patch minimum covers five sergeants with one shirt each. Multiply by the number of shirts and jackets each sergeant wears, then add two spares per sergeant for torn sleeves and late promotions.

How long do custom sergeant stripes take?

Production takes 3 to 4 weeks after you approve the free proof. Start the order as soon as the promotion list is final so the stripes arrive before the ceremony. Adding a few spares to the first order means a sergeant promoted later in the year can be outfitted the same day instead of waiting for a new run. Need them sooner? Rush production takes 7 to 10 days. Request a quote with your deadline and we reply within 4 hours.

Should sergeant stripes be velcro or sew-on?

Use sew-on stripes for shirts and jackets, which are washed often and need the patch to stay flat and secure. Use hook-and-loop, which adds 2 dollars per patch, for vests and carriers that move between uniforms or officers. Many departments order both from the same design, so the dress stripes and the vest chevron match exactly.

Can I order sergeant stripes in department colors?

Yes. Send a photo of your current stripes or list the thread and twill colors, and the proof shows them before production. Gold, silver, white, black, navy blue and subdued coyote or olive are the most common choices, and metallic gold or silver thread is available for dress and honor guard uniforms. Nothing is stitched until you approve the colors.

What size are sergeant chevrons?

Sizes vary by department and uniform policy, so there is no single standard sergeant chevron size. Send the width and height of the chevron your sergeants wear now, or a photo of it next to a ruler, and the proof lists the exact dimensions. Smaller sizes for collar points and caps are made as separate designs with their own minimum.

How do I sew on sergeant stripes?

Position the chevron where your uniform policy sets it, usually centered on the upper sleeve below the shoulder patch, and pin or baste it flat. Straight-stitch around the border with thread that matches the edge, by machine or by hand, keeping the stitches just inside the border. A uniform tailor can attach a pair in a few minutes.

What is the difference between staff, master and first sergeant patches?

All three start with three chevrons. Staff or senior sergeant adds one rocker underneath, master sergeant adds two, and first sergeant adds two rockers with a center diamond between them. Departments use these titles differently, so tell us your titles and send a photo, and the proof follows your structure rather than a generic chart.

Do you make the Sergeant II chevron?

Yes. The Sergeant II chevron, three chevrons with one rocker, is available as a ready product, and the same artwork can be recolored in the designer. Sergeant III and other numbered grades are made by adding rockers to match your department. Each numbered grade is its own design with its own 10-piece minimum on the same price ladder.

Can the rocker say K9 or a unit name?

Yes. The rocker under the chevrons can carry K9, a unit, a division or a short title. Embroidered lettering stays readable down to about 4mm tall, so short words fit a rocker best. Longer unit names can be split across two rockers, and the proof shows exactly how the lettering will look before anything is stitched.

Do you make subdued sergeant chevrons for vests?

Yes. Subdued sergeant chevrons in black thread on coyote tan or olive drab are made with hook-and-loop backing for vests, plate carriers and tactical shirts. They keep the grade readable up close without a bright patch on tactical gear. Order them alongside dress stripes from the same artwork so the proportions match.

Can you copy the sergeant chevrons we wear now?

Yes. Send clear photos of the front of your current chevron with your quote request, ideally with a ruler in the frame. We match its shape, colors and border on the proof, and you approve it before production. Once approved, the artwork stays on file, so every later reorder matches the first batch.

Do you accept purchase orders for sergeant patches?

Yes. Police departments, sheriff's offices, corrections agencies and security companies can order sergeant stripes on a purchase order. Send the PO with the grades and quantities, and the free proof comes back before production starts. We ship nationwide, and reorders can go on a new PO whenever the next promotion list is posted.

Can we order several sergeant grades at once?

Yes. Order sergeant, staff, master and first sergeant designs together in one request. Each design carries its own 10-piece minimum and prices on the same ladder, and the proof shows the grades side by side so the thread colors and borders match across every sergeant in the department, from the newest promotion to the senior grades.
