Choose your patch type
Six constructions cover almost every design. Pick the one that suits your artwork and how the patch will be worn.

Embroidered
Thread stitched on twill. The classic choice for uniforms, logos and crests.

Embroidered badges
Shield, star and seal shapes stitched as patches for uniforms.

Woven
Fine thread woven flat. Thinner, lighter and sharp down to about 2mm lettering.

PVC rubber
Molded 3D rubber in up to 6 colors. Waterproof and built for gear.

Printed
Full-color printing for photos, gradients and shaded artwork.

Leather
Your logo or text on leather for hats, denim, aprons and bags.
Which type of custom patch should you choose?
Choose embroidered for most uniforms and logos, woven when lettering is very small, PVC for waterproof gear, printed for photos and gradients, chenille for letterman jackets, and leather for hats and goods. Every type starts at 10 pieces and can be ordered as a rush in 7–10 days.
| Type | What it is | Best for | Smallest text | Standard production | Rush |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidered | Thread stitched on twill | Uniforms, logos, crests | About 4mm | 3–4 weeks | 7–10 days |
| Woven | Fine thread woven flat | Detailed art, small lettering | About 2mm | 3–5 weeks | 7–10 days |
| PVC rubber | Molded rubber, raised 3D | Outdoor gear, tactical, bags | About 2mm | 4–8 weeks | 7–10 days |
| Printed | Full-color print | Photos and gradients | Fine print detail | Confirmed on your proof | 7–10 days |
| Chenille | Looped yarn on felt | Letterman jackets, letters | Large letters and shapes | Confirmed on your proof | 7–10 days |
| Leather | Logo or text on leather | Hats, denim, aprons, bags | Simple text and logos | Confirmed on your proof | 7–10 days |
Standard production starts when you approve your free proof. If your date is closer, choose rush on the quote form and tell us the deadline.
Which backing should your patches have?
The backing decides where a patch can go and how long it stays. Embroidered patches can take any of the five; PVC comes with hook-and-loop or sew-on.
Iron-on
A heat-activated adhesive back for shirts, totes and casual jackets that can take an iron.
Sew-on
A plain back for uniforms and workwear that are washed often. The patch stays for the life of the garment.
Hook-and-loop
Hook backing (with matching loop) so the patch moves between vests, bags and caps. Adds $2 per patch on embroidered, woven and printed patches.
Plastic backing
A firm back that keeps the patch flat for display boards, collections and framing.
Sticker (adhesive)
A peel-and-stick back for single-day events, giveaways and trade shows. Not made for washing.
Shop by where the patch goes

How much do custom patches cost?
Custom patches cost $20 each at 10–19 pieces and drop to $3 per patch at 250–499 pieces; orders of 500 and up are quoted individually. That ladder covers embroidered, woven, printed, chenille and leather patches. PVC patches are priced on their own scale, from $25 each at 10 pieces down to $2.50 each at 2,000 or more.
10 patches at $20.00 per patch · 10-piece minimum per design
The calculator shows the general patch ladder. Hook-and-loop backing adds $2 per patch on embroidered, woven and printed patches. Your quote confirms the final price for your design.
Custom patch price ladder
| Quantity | Price per patch | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 10–19 patches | $20.00 | 10 = $200.00 |
| 20–29 patches | $14.00 | 20 = $280.00 |
| 30–49 patches | $11.00 | 30 = $330.00 |
| 50–74 patches | $6.50 | 50 = $325.00 |
| 75–99 patches | $6.00 | 75 = $450.00 |
| 100–249 patches | $5.50 | 100 = $550.00 |
| 250–499 patches | $3.00 | 250 = $750.00 |
| 500 and up | Quoted individually | Request a written quote |
Why a bigger order can cost less
Because the price per patch drops at each tier, rounding up to the next break often lowers the total. Check the tier above your number before you order.
| 20 patches = $280.00 | costs less than any order of 15–19 |
| 30 patches = $330.00 | costs less than any order of 24–29 |
| 50 patches = $325.00 | costs less than any order of 24–49 |
| 75 patches = $450.00 | costs less than any order of 70–74 |
| 100 patches = $550.00 | costs less than any order of 92–99 |
| 250 patches = $750.00 | costs less than any order of 137–249 |
Try your own quantity in the calculator above, or send your numbers and we will find the best price break for you.
How to get cheap custom patches without cutting corners
- ✓Order at the next price break: 50 patches cost less than 45.
- ✓Keep one design and change only the names or ranks.
- ✓Choose sew-on or iron-on backing instead of hook-and-loop.
- ✓Reorder from your saved file with no new setup cost.
Can I order a single custom patch?
No: the minimum is 10 patches per design, so a single custom patch is not available. A 10-piece order still has no setup or digitizing fee, and your file is kept on record, so a small top-up order later carries no new fees either.

What artwork can I send?
Send whatever you have: a vector logo, a PNG or JPG, a hand sketch, a photo of an existing patch, or an AI-generated image. Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) give the cleanest edges, but they are not required.
Vector logo
AI, EPS, PDF or SVG files keep every edge crisp at any size.
Image file
PNG or JPG files work; higher resolution helps us match fine detail.
Sketch or idea
Draw it on paper or describe it, and we build the design for you.
Old patch
Send a photo of a patch you already wear and we recreate it, updated if you like.
Borders, thread and finishing options
Merrowed border
Thread wrapped around the edge, the classic finish for rounds, ovals, squares and shields.
Hot-cut border
A clean edge that follows any custom outline the merrowed border cannot.
Thread coverage
From a logo on visible twill up to 100% stitched coverage, chosen per design.
Metallic thread
Gold or silver thread for stars, crests, lettering and anniversary years.
Color matching
Thread colors matched to your artwork; PVC uses up to 6 matched colors.
Mixed versions
One design in several sizes or backings, such as a sew-on sleeve and a hook-and-loop bag version.
How big can a custom patch be?
Standard custom patches run from 1-inch name tapes up to 6-inch patches, and larger pieces such as jacket backs are quoted per size. Any shape is possible: round, oval, shield, rectangle, star or a custom outline.
Small patches
Name tapes, tabs and small logos for caps, chests and gear. Keep lettering at least 4mm tall on embroidered patches.
Standard sizes
Shoulder, chest and sleeve patches within the standard range up to 6 inches.
Large patches
Jacket backs and oversized pieces are quoted per size, with the same 10-piece minimum.
Custom shapes
A hot-cut border follows any outline, from mascots to state shapes.
Custom patches for shirts, clothing and backpacks
The right backing depends on what the patch goes on. Here is what works where.
| Where | Common patch | Best backing |
|---|---|---|
| Work shirts and uniforms | Logo or name patch on the chest or sleeve | Sew-on |
| T-shirts and hoodies | Logo or event patch | Iron-on or sew-on |

| Caps and beanies | Front logo patch | Sew-on |
| Jackets | Chest, sleeve or large back piece | Sew-on |
| Tactical vests and carriers | ID panel, name tape, unit patch | Hook-and-loop |
| Display boards and collections | Commemorative or event patch | Plastic or sticker |
Not sure which backing to choose? Tell us where the patch will be worn and we recommend one on your quote.

How to wash and care for custom patches
Patches last longer with gentle washing. This is our own care guidance as the maker.
| Situation | What to do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Machine washing | Turn the garment inside out and use a cold, gentle cycle. | Bleach and hot washes. |
| Drying | Hang to dry, or tumble on the lowest heat setting. | High dryer heat, which can loosen iron-on adhesive. |
| Pressing | Iron the garment from the inside, or press through a cloth. | Direct iron contact with metallic thread or PVC. |
| Spot cleaning | Blot with cold water and a little mild soap. | Stiff brushes on the stitched face. |
| Hook-and-loop patches | Take the patch off, or close the hook side, before washing. | Open hook backing in a load with knitwear. |
How to store patches
| Flat | Stops merrowed edges from curling. |
|---|---|
| Dry | Moisture can mildew twill and thread. |
| Out of sunlight | Prolonged sun fades thread colors. |

- ✓A promotion or a new rank

Not sure which patch page fits your order?
Departments outfitting a whole agency usually start with chevrons, rockers and command insignia for each grade, which cover every officer from patrol to command. Crews in vests and carriers usually need name and agency ID panels for duty vests, since those mount on hook-and-loop panels. Ambulance services and dispatch centers have their own set: medic and EMT crew patches come in the same builds and backings, from the same 10-piece minimum.

Custom patch questions, answered
How does the Owl Badges TruePatch Designer work?
The TruePatch Designer is an online patch builder that works in any browser, and you can start without an account. Pick a style, then set the shape, size, thread colors, border, backing and each line of text while the preview updates. Embroidered, woven and PVC patches can be designed there. Revise it as often as you like at no charge, then order it directly or attach it to a quote request.
What types of custom patches can I order?
You can order six constructions: embroidered, woven, PVC rubber, printed, chenille and leather. Embroidered suits most uniforms and logos, woven holds lettering down to about 2mm, PVC is waterproof and raised in 3D, printed reproduces photos and gradients, chenille gives the varsity letterman look, and leather suits hats and goods. Every type starts at 10 pieces.
How much do custom patches cost?
Custom patches cost 20 dollars each at 10 to 19 pieces, 14 dollars from 20, 11 dollars from 30, 6 dollars 50 cents from 50, 6 dollars from 75 and 5 dollars 50 cents from 100, falling to 3 dollars per patch at 250 to 499. Orders of 500 and up are quoted individually. PVC patches are priced separately, from 25 dollars each at 10 pieces to 2 dollars 50 cents at 2,000 or more. There are no setup or digitizing fees.
What is the minimum order for custom patches?
The minimum is 10 patches per design, so single patches are not available. A 10-piece order still has no setup or digitizing fee, and your file is kept on record, so later top-up orders carry no new setup costs either. Different names or ranks can be ordered as separate designs, each from 10 pieces.
How long does custom patch production take?
Standard production takes 3 to 4 weeks for embroidered patches, 3 to 5 weeks for woven and 4 to 8 weeks for PVC, counted from the day you approve your free proof. Printed, chenille and leather timelines are confirmed on the proof. Rush orders take 7 to 10 days for any patch type.
Can I get custom patches fast?
Yes. Rush orders take 7 to 10 days. Choose the rush option on the quote form and add the date you need the patches, and we plan the order around that deadline. Quote requests are answered within 4 hours, so the sooner you send your design, the sooner production can start.
How fast do you reply to a quote request?
We reply within 4 hours, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your quote shows the price per patch at your quantity, the timeline for your date, and the construction and backing we recommend. If you approve it, we send your free digital proof next. Phone calls are answered Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM PST.
What backings are available on custom patches?
There are five: sew-on, iron-on, hook-and-loop, plastic and sticker. Sew-on suits uniforms that are washed often, iron-on suits casual garments, and hook-and-loop lets a patch move between gear for 2 dollars more per patch on embroidered, woven and printed patches. Plastic keeps a patch flat for display, and sticker suits single-day events. PVC patches come with hook-and-loop or sew-on backing.
What file formats do you accept for patch artwork?
Send whatever you have. Vector files such as AI, EPS, PDF or SVG give the cleanest edges, and PNG or JPG images work too. A hand sketch, a photo of an existing patch or an AI-generated image is enough to start. We turn your artwork into a patch design and show it on a free proof.
Do you accept department purchase orders?
Yes. Purchase orders are accepted for departments, companies and teams, and verified agencies can request NET-30 terms. Send your purchase order details with your quote request, and your free proof lists the artwork, quantities, sizes and backings for approval before production. Rush orders can be placed on a purchase order too, with the deadline noted on the request.
Can a department order several patch versions in one order?
Yes. One order can include several designs, such as different ranks, units or names, and several sizes or backings of the same design. Each design starts at 10 pieces. Everything goes on one quote and one proof set, so the whole rollout is approved together. Each version shows separately on the proof, so nothing gets mixed up.
Can I upload my department logo or unit emblem for a patch?
Yes. Upload the logo or emblem you already use, or send a photo of a current patch. We convert it to a stitch file at no charge, match the colors, and send a proof so you can check every detail before production. The file stays on record for reorders, and vector files give the cleanest edges.
Can you turn my company logo into a patch?
Yes. Send your logo in any format and we turn it into an embroidered, woven, PVC, printed or leather patch for shirts, hats, jackets and bags. There is no setup or digitizing fee, the minimum is 10 pieces per design, and you approve a free proof before production starts. Logo patches work well for staff uniforms, merchandise and event giveaways.
What happens after I submit my custom patch design?
We reply within 4 hours with your quote. Once you approve it, we send a free digital proof showing the size, colors, border and backing. You can request changes until it is right. Production starts when you approve the proof, and your patches ship when the run is complete. Rush orders take 7 to 10 days.
Can I get custom patches made near me?
Yes, from anywhere in the US. Owl Badges makes custom patches in Simi Valley, California and ships them nationwide, so you can order online without a local shop. Send your design, get a free quote within 4 hours, approve the proof, and your patches are shipped to you. Phone help is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM PST.
Do you make custom cloth patches?
Yes. Cloth patches are usually embroidered, with thread stitched onto a twill base, or woven, with fine thread woven flat for small lettering. Both come in any shape and size up to 6 inches, with larger pieces quoted per size, and both start at 10 pieces with no setup fees.
Do you charge setup or digitizing fees?
No. There are no setup, digitizing or design fees at any quantity, and PVC patches have no mold fee. We convert your artwork into a production file at no charge and keep it on record, so reorders match the first run without new costs. That applies to a 10-piece first order and to a large rollout alike.
How do I reorder custom patches?
Send a reorder request with your quantity. Your design file is kept on record, so the new run matches the original with no new setup fee. Reorders start at the same 10-piece minimum and follow the same production times, and rush is available if you need them sooner. Tell us if anything should change, such as a new name or year.
Do you make stick-on patches?
Yes. Sticker backing is a peel-and-stick adhesive suited to single-day events, giveaways and trade shows. It is not made for washing, so for clothing that will be laundered choose iron-on or sew-on backing instead. Sticker backing is available on embroidered patches from the 10-piece minimum, and you can ask about it for other builds on your quote.
How big can custom patches be?
Standard sizes run from 1-inch name tapes up to 6-inch patches, which covers caps, chests, sleeves and shoulders. Larger pieces such as jacket backs are quoted per size, with the same 10-piece minimum. Keep embroidered lettering at least 4mm tall so it stays readable. Tell us where the patch will be worn and we suggest a size.
